Understanding Default Router IP Addresses

The default router IP address is a series of numbers that you can use to access the web admin interface of your router. When you enter the default router IP address into a web browser, you may configure the router settings, monitor connected devices, and protect your network from unauthorized access.

One common default router IP address is 192.168.1.1. Different router brands may have distinct default IP addresses, such as 192.168.0.1 or 10.0.0.1. You should know the default IP address of your router to manage your network efficiently.

How to Find Your Router’s Default IP Address

Default router IP addresses are important in network administration, as they give you access to manage and configure the router’s default settings. That is why you need to know where to find it when you need to log in.

To find your router’s default IP address, you can check the router’s manual or search online using the router’s model number. However, if you have misplaced your manual, here are the ways you can do alternatively:

Via command prompt:

1. On your Windows device go to search icon and type “command prompt” then press Enter.

2. On the command prompt, enter “ipconfig”.

3. You will then see the default gateway which is also your IP address.

The steps above are only applicable to Windows. You can check out our guide on how to find IP address in MAC and Linux.

Via Network and Internet Settings:

You can also find it in the Network and Internet Settings. To do it:

1. Go to Network and Internet Settings on your Windows device.

2. Go to WiFi > (Your Network name or SSID name). In my case, the WiFi name is Huawei-2.4G-64tH_EXT.

Via router itself:

The default router IP addresses can also be found on the back of the router. Flip your router upside down, as the IP address is sometimes located at the back or at the bottom of the router. You can see it together with the default login details, typically printed on a sticker, so go check it out

By following these steps, you’ll easily find your router’s default IP address and have the necessary information to manage your network effectively.

Changing Your Default Router IP Address

To change your default router IP address, I recommend following these straightforward steps to ensure a smooth transition to a new IP:

  1. Initially, access your router’s settings through a web browser. Type the current default IP address into the browser’s address bar, enter your login credentials, and navigate to the settings page.
  2. Once in the router settings, look for the network or LAN settings tab. Here, you’ll find the option to change the router’s IP address.
  3. Choose a new IP address for your router. Ensure the new address falls within the private IP address range to prevent conflicts. Common private IP ranges include 192.168.0.0 – 192.168.255.255 or 10.0.0.0 – 10.255.255.255.
  4. After entering the new IP address, remember to save the changes before rebooting your router. This step is crucial to implement the newly assigned IP address successfully.
  5. Once the router reboots, test the new IP address by entering it into your browser’s address bar. If the login page appears, you have successfully changed the default router IP address.
