Knowing how to blacklist a Wi-Fi user can solve your problems with unwanted connections on your Wi-Fi network. When there are unauthorized connections, your network will be weak, and you’ll experience slow speeds, lags and buffering. Good thing there is a way to eliminate these users, and this is by blacklisting them. Here is how you can do it for some of the common routers out there.
Signs Your Network is Being Used by Others
Before we jump into the steps of blacklisting a WiFi user, let us learn first the signs your network is being used by other users. Check out your network if you encounter these issues:
- Frequent lag: If your internet suddenly feels slower than usual, even when you’re not streaming, gaming, or downloading heavy files, it could mean someone else is eating up your bandwidth.
- Unusual data usage: If your monthly internet usage suddenly increase the consumption, even though your online habits haven’t changed, the probably unknown devices are connected.
- Devices you don’t recognize: If you see some gadgets that are connected but don’t know who they belongs to in your household, that’s a clear red flag.
- Router lights blinking oddly: If your WiFi light keeps flickering even when you’re not actively using the internet, it might be a sign that someone else is online through your connection.
- Pages or apps loading slowly: When your usual browsing or streaming becomes unusually sluggish, there’s a chance others are sharing your network without permission.
How to Blacklist a WiFi User
If you experience at least one or two signs mentioned above, then there is a possibility that your network is being used by other users outside your network. To add them to the blacklist, here are the steps to perform depending on the brand of the router.
The very first thing you need to do is login to your router regardless of the brand. Here are the default IP addresses you can use to log in:

For TP-Link:
1. Log in to the router’s web interface.
2. On the dashboard, select Access Control.
3. Select Host to get into the Host Settings.
4. Get the MAC address of the device you want to blacklist in the DHCP Client List.
5. Go back to Host and click Add device
6. Enter the MAC address in the MAC Address field.
7. In the Description field, enter the device name you want to add.
8. Click Save.
9. Go to the Rule tab and check the box for Enable Internet Access Control.
10. Under Default Filtering Rules select “Allow the packets not specified by any filtering rules to passthrough this device“, then Click Save.
11. Next, create a new rule by clicking Add new.
12. In the Description field, enter the device name.
13. In the LAN Host field, select the name of the device.
14. In the Rule field, select Deny.
15, In the Direction field, select OUT.
16. Click Save.
For D-Link:
1. Log in to your router settings.
2. On the dashboard, select Status > DHCP Clients.
3. Copy the MAC address of the device you want to block.
4. Click Advanced > Parental Control > MAC Block.
5. Under MAC Blocking, enter the MAC address you will block in the MAC Address field.
6. Check all the boxes, then click Add rule.
For Netgear:
- Log in to the router settings.
- On the dashborad, select Basic > Access Control.
- On the next page, you will see the device name, IP address, and MAC address of the devices using your network.
- Tick the box next to the device yo;u want to block, then click Block.
You will now see that the device has been blocked.
